Functional Incontinence

Functional incontinence is seen more commonly in individuals with an altered sense of bladder fullness, a decreased capacity to understand the bladder is full, or have physical limitations making it difficult to get to the bathroom. Treatment is focused on life style and behavioral changes such as bedside commodes, or scheduled voiding. Scheduled voiding can be labor intensive for the caregiver but is often an effective remedy. Other treatments include medication adjustment, physical therapy and intermittent bladder drainage.
